Dear Parents and Students,

Durango School District, along with all schools in Colorado and across the nation, are facing significant budget shortfalls next year and beyond.  The state is anticipating needing to cut $4 billion dollars from next year’s budget, and this figure continues to grow.  The district is hosting a virtual Public Budget Review Meeting on May 27th from 5-7 pm, and you are invited to learn more, provide feedback, or just to listen.  Please mark your calendars now for this meeting, and watch for more communication and the link to this meeting in district communication.

McDonald's is offering teacher recognition this year for the outstanding effort at making learning engaging for students in this "Home-Based-Learning" model.  This “Above and Beyond the Call” or ABC Award will be awarded to a teacher from each school in the district during the week of Memorial Day.  Please nominate our fabulous Florida Mesa teachers by emailing Mr. Snowberger at  DSnowberger@durangoschools.org. Include a brief explanation of the supports provided by your child’s teacher, and any pictures that can highlight this amazing work.  Please put ABC Award in the subject. The district may use these nominations for other recognitions available in the district.

Beginning today, May 18th, Colorado’s PBS channel will broadcast reading and literacy learning opportunities every weekday morning for grades K-3rd.  It sounds like this will continue throughout the summer and is a great opportunity to continue to engage your student in reading while continuing to be Safer at Home.  You can find more information here.

Please remember that registration for the 20-21 school year is currently open.  Current families, new families, incoming kindergarten families, and preschool families ALL need to register for the upcoming school year.   Current families need to log into their Parent InfiniteCampus account to update records and confirm attendance for the 2020/21 school year. New families, including incoming kindergarten, can click HERE to register. Preschool registration is also open and can be accessed HERE.  Please complete your registration as soon as possible as it provides us with important information as we are planning for next year.

We will host grade level drive-through drop off/pick up service starting on May 26th.  Student materials, personal items, projects, and other work will be returned at this time.  You should also plan to return any library books and/or Chromebooks during this time.  If you will need the Chromebook to complete the last week’s set of work, you may also drop off Chromebooks on June 1st or 2nd.  Please plan to come during your OLDEST child’s grade level pick up day/time and we will return items for all of your students as well.  Be prepared to let the drive-up attendant know your student’s name(s), grade level(s), and homeroom teacher(s) as you come through the drop-off/pick up line.  The schedule will be as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 26th, 10am-1pm, 5th grade
  • Wednesday, May 27th, 10am-1pm, 4th and 3rd grade
  • Thursday, May 28th, 10am-1pm, 2nd grade
  • Friday, May 29th, 10am-1pm, 1st grade and Kindergarten
  • Monday, June 1st, 8am-3pm, Chromebook drop off only: Ring the bell and a staff member will retrieve the Chromebook from you.
  • Tuesday, June 2nd, 8am-3pm, Chromebook drop off only: Ring the bell and a staff member will retrieve the Chromebook from you.

We will also bring out items from lost & found. Please look for items you know may be missing while honoring social distancing.
