The map is so popular with schools around the state, that last year the map's schedule filled before Florida Mesa could book a visit. Fifth grade teacher Misty Smith added the school to the wait list, ensuring the school's first visit by the giant map.
Rebecca Theobald of the COGA traveled to Florida Mesa with the map and a trunk full materials to lead lessons in kindergarten through 5th grade. She lead students on walking tour of the map, tracing the Continental Divide, locating rivers and mountains, and exploring the Colorado landscape. Strolling the state border, students named and counted states that border Colorado, and discussed why so many towns and cities developed around rivers.
Younger students learned how to read a map key and explored cartography as they used props to mark their own landmarks on the map.
What a fun way to explore geography!
